Big Changes To The 2024 Mazda 3: 5 Key Upgrades For The Canadian Market

The fourth-generation Mazda 3, the sedan and hatchback successors to the Mazda Protege and Mazda 323, will be upgraded for the 2024 model year in Canada with multi-faceted improvements.

Established as a distinctly premium small car with class-leading performance, the Mazda 3 has always been known as a competitor that places the focus on the driver. That becomes all the more true with the 2024 Mazda 3 and 2024 Mazda 3 Sport.

We're highlighting five key upgrades Mazda's introducing with the revamped 2024 Mazda 3, including an all-new special edition.

SUNA

Like the CX30, CX-5, and MX-30, the 2024 Mazda 3 will be available as a Suna Edition in the Sport (hatchback) bodystyle. The Suna is differentiated by Zircon Sand Metallic paint, 18-inch black metallic wheels, and gloss black door mirrors. Interior upholstery is Black/Terracotta with Terracotta stitching. The 2024 Mazda 3 Sport Suna Edition starts off life as a Mazda 3 Sport GT Turbo.

SCREENS

Beginning with the GS Comfort Package, the 2024 Mazda 3 will be fitted with Mazda's new 10.25-inch infotainment screen with touchscreen functionality. In the GT trim level, that infotainment unit is upgraded with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility.

2.5

The 2.0-liter engine that formerly served as the entry-level powerplant for the Mazda 3 has been removed from the lineup. That means Mazda's Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter engine is now the foundation of the 2024 Mazda 3 lineup. The 2.5 is standard in the Mazda 3 GX, Mazda 3 GS, and Mazda 3 GT. An optional 2.5-liter turbo (250 horsepower; 320 lb-ft of torque) can be selected in the GT and is standard in the Suna.

POWER

However, there's more news surrounding the switch from Mazda's 2.0-liter engine to the 2.5-liter powerplant. The 2.5 now produces 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, improvements of 36 horsepower and 36 lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing 2.0L and an improvement of 5 horsepower compared to the 2023 Mazda 3's 2.5L.

EFFICIENCY

Furthermore, the increase in power from the revised 2.5L unexpectedly goes hand-in-hand with improved fuel economy. And not just in comparison to the outgoing 2.5. Thanks to the wonders of updated cylinder deactivation, the new 2.5L is actually more efficient than the smaller, far less powerful 2.0L engine.

The 2024 Mazda 3 Skyactiv-G 2.5 is rated at 8.4 L/100km in the city; 6.3 L/100km on the highway; 7.5 L/100km overall. It can also be linked to a 6-speed manual transmission in the Mazda 3 Sport GT: 9.0 L/100km city, 6.4 L/100km highway; 7.8 L/100km overall.

Mazda CX-70 vs Mazda CX-90 – What's The Difference?

Two rows or three? Take your pick. The 2025 Mazda CX-70 arrives in the spring of 2024 as the CX-90's five-seat offspring.
